Student Leadership
At Thornden School, student leadership is a central part of our Personal Development provision and plays a key role in shaping our culture of Belong, Care, Aspire, Achieve. We are committed to developing confident, responsible young people who are able to lead, influence, and contribute meaningfully to their community.
Student leadership at Thornden is purposeful and structured. It goes beyond representation and provides students with genuine opportunities to contribute to decision-making, influence school development, and develop the skills needed for life beyond school.
Our Intent
Our student leadership programme is designed to:
- Develop confident, articulate, and responsible young people
- Promote active citizenship and a deep understanding of democracy
- Strengthen students’ sense of belonging and pride in their school
- Provide authentic opportunities for students to influence change
- Develop leadership skills including communication, teamwork, and problem-solving
This work directly supports students’ Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development and promotes British Values, particularly democracy, mutual respect, and individual liberty.
A Structured Student Parliament
At the heart of student leadership at Thornden is our Student Parliament, developed in partnership with Unloc. This provides a formal, democratic structure through which students are trained to lead, debate, and influence change.
The Student Parliament is organised in a way that mirrors real-world government, helping students to understand how leadership and decision-making operate in society.
Students are assigned to specialist “departments”, each focusing on key areas of school life:
- Eco & Sustainability
- Education & Study
- Charity & Fundraising
- Health & Wellbeing
- Diversity & Inclusion
- Active (Sport and Physical Wellbeing)
Each department works collaboratively to:
- Identify priorities and areas for improvement
- Gather student voice from across the school
- Develop ideas and initiatives
- Present proposals to the wider Student Parliament
These ideas are then fed into the Student Cabinet, where they are discussed and shared with senior leaders, ensuring that student voice leads to meaningful action.
Wider Leadership Opportunities
Alongside the Student Parliament, students can take on a range of leadership roles across the school:
- Senior Student Leaders – represent the student body, support whole-school events, and meet with senior leaders to discuss key issues
- Year Group Leaders – work with Heads of Year to support assemblies, events, and provide guidance to younger students
- Department Leaders – support curriculum areas, extracurricular activities, and subject events across the school
All roles are underpinned by high expectations. Student leaders are expected to act as role models, demonstrate Thornden values, support their peers, and contribute positively to the school community.
Implementation
Student leadership is carefully structured and supported to ensure it is meaningful and impactful:
- Students are selected through an application and interview process, ensuring commitment and suitability
- Leaders receive training through our partnership with Unloc, developing skills in leadership, communication, and teamwork
- Regular meetings take place within departments and across the Student Parliament
- Clear links exist between Student Parliament, the Personal Development curriculum, and whole-school priorities
- Student leaders work directly with staff, including Heads of Year and Senior Leadership Team members
Leadership opportunities are progressive, allowing students to build confidence and responsibility over time.
