British Values

At Thornden School, British Values are central to our ethos and underpin our commitment to safeguarding, inclusion and personal development. We actively promote the core principles of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. We recognise that these are not simply “British” values, but universal principles that enable individuals to live safely, respectfully and successfully within modern Britain.

We believe that students should not only learn about these values, but experience and apply them in their daily lives. As such, British Values are deliberately woven through every aspect of school life — from our Personal Development curriculum, tutor programme and assemblies, to subject teaching, student leadership and enrichment opportunities. Through this coherent and embedded approach, students develop the knowledge, skills and character needed to participate positively in a diverse, democratic society.

Our curriculum is designed to build understanding over time, enabling students to explore concepts such as fairness, equality, rights and responsibility in an age-appropriate and increasingly sophisticated way. Opportunities for student voice — including our Student Council, Unloc Student Parliament and wider student leadership roles — ensure that democracy is not only taught but actively lived and experienced by all students.

At Thornden, we place a strong emphasis on relationships, respect and belonging. We are committed to developing confident, informed and compassionate young people who value diversity, challenge discrimination and demonstrate empathy towards others. Through our broad and balanced curriculum, and our focus on spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, students leave Thornden well-prepared to contribute positively to their communities and wider society.
