International Trips

International visits play a significant role in enriching the experience of students at Thornden. They reflect our commitment to broadening horizons, developing cultural understanding, and bringing learning to life beyond the classroom.

We are proud of the range of opportunities available to students across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. These visits are carefully planned to support both personal development and academic learning, helping students to build confidence, independence, and a deeper appreciation of the world around them.

Our established programme of international visits includes:

  • Year 9: Barcelona, French Exchange, Ski Trip
  • Year 10: French Exchange, Spanish Exchange, CERN (biennial), World Challenge, Berlin (biennial), Ski Trip
  • Year 11: Paris, German Christmas Markets, CERN (biennial), Iceland, New York, Berlin (biennial), Ski Trip

These experiences are designed to complement and enhance the curriculum. Through language immersion, cultural exploration, and subject-specific enrichment, students are able to make meaningful connections between their learning in school and the wider world.

International visits make a strong contribution to students’ Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development. They provide opportunities for students to experience different cultures and traditions first-hand, reflect on their own values, and develop respect and understanding for others. Students learn to navigate unfamiliar environments, work collaboratively, and represent the school positively.

They also play an important role in developing students’ cultural capital. By exposing students to new places, perspectives, and experiences beyond their immediate context, these visits help to build the knowledge, confidence, and awareness needed to succeed in further education, employment, and life in modern Britain.

In doing so, they reinforce key British Values, particularly mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs, while encouraging students to act responsibly and engage positively with the wider world.

For many students, these visits are a highlight of their time at Thornden, leaving a lasting impact both academically and personally, and helping to prepare them to take their place confidently in society.
