Extra-Curricular

Extra-Curricular Opportunities

At Thornden School, we believe that some of the most important learning happens beyond the classroom. Our extra-curricular programme is a central part of school life and plays a key role in helping students develop into confident, well-rounded and engaged young people.

We offer a wide range of opportunities that encourage students to try new things, build friendships and develop skills that will support them both in school and beyond. Whether through sport, the arts, academic enrichment or social activities, we aim to ensure that every student can find something that interests and motivates them.

A Broad and Inclusive Offer

Our extra-curricular programme runs throughout the week, before school, at break and lunchtime, and after school. It is designed to be accessible to all students, with a strong emphasis on participation, enjoyment and personal development.

Students can get involved in a wide variety of activities, including:

  • Sport and physical activity, ranging from athletics, cricket, rounders and tennis through to competitive teams representing the school
  • Performing arts, including choirs, bands, orchestras, dance companies and drama productions, supported by our purpose-built Performing Arts Centre
  • Academic and creative clubs, such as STEM, coding, chess, languages and subject-specific enrichment
  • Social and wellbeing opportunities, including library clubs, board games, creative activities and calm spaces to support wellbeing
  • Inclusive and student-led groups, such as Pride Group and initiatives like Operation Clean Up Thornden, which promote community and responsibility

Our music and performing arts provision is particularly strong, with a wide range of ensembles running throughout the week, allowing students of all abilities to rehearse, perform and develop their confidence.

Similarly, our PE programme offers opportunities for all students to participate and develop, whether for enjoyment or at a competitive level.

Opportunities Beyond the Classroom

We also place a strong emphasis on experiences that build character and independence. Our Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is a well-established and highly valued part of school life, giving students the opportunity to challenge themselves through volunteering, physical activity and expedition work.

Across all areas of the programme, students are encouraged to take on responsibility, try new experiences and step outside their comfort zone.

Student Leadership and Participation

Many of our extra-curricular activities provide opportunities for students to take on leadership roles, whether that is supporting younger students, helping to run clubs or contributing to events and performances.

This helps students to develop:

  • Confidence and communication skills
  • Organisation and responsibility
  • A sense of pride in contributing to the school community

These opportunities link closely with our wider Student Leadership programme and help to develop leadership skills in a practical and meaningful way.

Ensuring Access for All Students

We are committed to ensuring that all students are able to take part in extra-curricular activities, not just those who naturally put themselves forward.

To support this, we use a centralised enrichment tracker to monitor participation across the school. This allows us to:

  • Identify which students are engaging in activities
  • Spot patterns across different groups
  • Follow up with students who may not yet be involved
  • Adapt our offer where needed

This means our programme is not only broad, but also carefully monitored and continually improved.

Supporting Disadvantaged Students – Thornden Champions

Our extra-curricular provision is closely linked to our disadvantaged strategy through the Thornden Champions programme.

Through this approach, we:

  • Work closely with students to understand their interests and any barriers to participation
  • Encourage and support students to get involved in activities that suit them
  • Use student voice to shape and improve the offer
  • Consider enrichment alongside attendance, wellbeing and overall engagement

This ensures that participation in extra-curricular activities is actively supported, rather than left to chance, particularly for those students who may benefit most.

Impact

As a result of our extra-curricular programme, students at Thornden:

  • Develop confidence, resilience and independence
  • Build strong relationships and a sense of belonging
  • Experience a wide range of opportunities beyond the classroom
  • Develop skills that support both academic success and future pathways

By carefully tracking participation and supporting students through programmes such as Thornden Champions, we ensure that these opportunities are accessible, inclusive and meaningful for all.

Students leave Thornden not only with strong academic outcomes, but as confident, engaged and well-rounded individuals, ready for the next stage of their lives.
