SEND

Joint SENDCo: Mrs R Roadnight and Mrs S Little

Thornden has an inclusive ethos that provides support for students with a range of needs. We aim to enable all of our students to experience all that the school has to offer, including a broad and balanced curriculum, trips and extra-curricular activities. We work to enable all SEND students to achieve their academic and personal potential - our planning and delivery is based on a full picture of need, both educational and pastoral. To this end, the Study Skills Department works collaboratively with teaching staff, Heads of Department, Heads of Year, and Senior Leaders to make sure that barriers to learning are removed and appropriate support is given. Learning Support Assistants mainly work alongside teachers in curriculum lessons, helping students to access taught materials and build independence and resilience.

We aim to create a safe, supportive learning environment that promotes the improvement of confidence, self-esteem and self-awareness. The views of the students and their parents/carers are taken into consideration in our planning and we create effective partnerships with outside agencies where appropriate. Thornden and the Study Skills Department work closely with feeder schools and colleges to support transition and we will share detailed information to SEND to facilitate this.
