History helps us understand change and how the world we live in came to be. Studying History provides a student with skills which are not confined to the study of the past. Skills of analysis are invaluable in many jobs, and the ability to analyse and then prioritise information is vital to decision making.

Assessment Styles

All students will complete three main History tests each year. These will be completed in class and are designed to test the factual recall, literacy and analytical skills necessary to succeed in History at GCSE and beyond. The homework and classwork of all students will be monitored and assessed by their class teacher as they progress through the year. Most assessed tasks will be completed in school during lesson time, but many will require some preparation out of lessons.

Skill Development

History helps students to improve a range of important skills. Students will develop their literacy skills as well as techniques of critical thinking, analysis and argument. The skills which you employ when studying History are highly transferable and are valued in many different careers. The expertise you develop within your History lessons will also help you to succeed across the curriculum and beyond your time at school.

Additional Information

This year we are running a Year 8 trip to the First World War battlefields in the summer term, and a GCSE trip to Berlin at Easter.

Period Studies: These are designed to explore key developments in a country's history over at least a 50 year period.

Worldwide Depth Studies: These focus on investigating the causes and consequences of international conflict and tension.

Thematic Studies: These enable students to understand change and continuity across a long sweep of history.

British Depth Studies: These enable students to gain understanding of the complexities of British society and/or historical situation.

Skill Development

Some tasks will be completed in school during lesson time, but many will require some work outside of lessons. Homework tasks are designed to consolidate existing learning or to prepare students for the next topic.

Additional Information

We offer a residential trip for GCSE students, which is open to Year 10 and Year 11. In the past we have visited various sites in Germany, Poland and France connected with the GCSE course. These trips are optional but offer a great experience and a unique perspective on many of the issues studied at GCSE.
